About Us

Who We Are

The Ethiopian English Language Professionals’ Association (EELPA) operates as a non-profit professional organization with a singular focus on enhancing the continuous professional development of English language teachers in Ethiopia.

The association, having secured legal recognition from the Charities and Societies Agency in January 2011, under certificate number 2600, has undergone a nuanced evolution spanning over two decades, marked by name changes that reflect its growing scope and influence.

Initially conceived as the ELT Teachers’ Network, the association provided an informal setting for members to convene and share experiences, fostering a sense of community and collaboration.

These sessions serve as dynamic platforms for members to share experiences, insights, and best practices, contributing not only to individual growth but also to the overall professional landscape of English language education in Ethiopia.

Beyond its local impact, EELPA extends its influence nationwide by organizing an array of professional development platforms. These include bimonthly regular sessions that foster ongoing engagement, annual conferences that serve as focal points for knowledge exchange, workshops and webinars that delve into specific aspects of language education, and both in-person and virtual teacher training programs.

Collaborative efforts with prestigious entities such as the British Council, the American Embassy, RELO, American Corner, the Ministry of Education, Gohote institution, IIE, Cathedral Girls’ Nativity School, and numerous local and international organizations enhance the association’s reach and effectiveness.

Our Direction

Where We're Headed

Our initial stage laid the foundation for subsequent transformations, leading to the emergence of the Addis Ababa English Language Teachers’ Association (AAELTA) and subsequent iterations as ELPA before culminating in its current form as the Ethiopian English Language Professionals’ Association.

EELPA’s global perspective is further amplified through our affiliations with Africa ELTA, ALZELC, IATEFL, TESOL and, among others.

These affiliations open doors for EELPA members to partake in international training and conferences, enriching their perspectives and contributing to the global discourse on English language education.

The exposure provided by these affiliations extends beyond borders, offering opportunities for professional growth and collaboration in African countries, England, and the United States of America.

Over the years, a significant number of EELPA members have actively benefited from these diverse opportunities, leveraging them for personal and professional advancement.

In summary, the Ethiopian English Language Professionals’ Association stands not only as a reflection of the evolving landscape of English language education in Ethiopia but also as a dynamic entity driving transformative change through continuous professional development, collaboration, and global engagement.
